As the administrator of a Sonic deployed solution, you are aware of the requirements to monitor Sonic events 24 by 7 such as a resource shutdown or abnormally high message volumes. From a business perspective, the impact of a down system can mean that customers are not being served or partners cannot place orders. As your deployed system ages over time and usage requirements change, it may be necessary to retune the application for optimum performance. To minimize downtime and ensure optimal system operation, enterprise class systems require a monitoring system.
The Sonic Event Monitor provides the capability to track, record, or redirect Sonic metrics and notifications, helping you to monitor and manage your applications. The Sonic Event Monitor is an extension of the SonicMQ management framework, providing a logging capability that you can configure with either the Sonic Management Console or the Management API.
With Sonic Event Monitor you can monitor alerts, metrics and performance data. Notification of events can be sent to multiple destinations, including databases, rolling log files, SMTP servers and SNMP clients. For example, alerts can be sent to Blackberry devices or enterprise system management systems like HP OpenView or IBM Tivoli. Historical data of system operations can be recorded for ongoing performance improvement and troubleshooting specific problems that occur in production. For example, an operator can search log files for abnormalities in metrics data and find correlations to an event.
Common use cases for Sonic Event Monitor include:
Queue Thresholds: When a queue reaches a specified threshold, send an email alerting the person monitoring operations.
Disconnects and Dropped Connections: If an application disconnects from Sonic, send an SNMP trap to your enterprise system management system, and/or send an email alerting the person monitoring operations.
Memory Thresholds: If the memory threshold is exceeded on a container, send an email to notify the system administrator.
Notification History (or Operational Audit): Log information to a file over a time period to capture all events. When a problem is reported, this information can be used to investigate and determine the cause of the problem.
Sonic Event Monitor is a must-have tool for the operations team enabling them to better monitor and manage Sonic deployments.
